LUCKY PEAK SAILBOAT

The Lucky Peak Sailboat's hull was specifically designed to be good under sail, easily rowed, and can be powered by a small outboard motor. Starting with the design of an open long boat from the 1850's we scaled the boat down to its 17 foot length, modified the bow, added a transom, and added a deck. This hull was then built using modern wooden strip/composite construction methods. The hull strips are Western Red Cedar and are covered with fiberglass and three coats of epoxy both inside and out. The frames, seats, and trim are made of oak, and the gunnels are of ash.

This sailboat was designed and built using a balanced lug sail which was a common sail of that era.  The sail shown is a Caledonia Yawl Mainsail kit from Sailrite Enterprises, Inc.

The Lucky Peak’s centerboard is made from 3/8” stainless steel plate (5’ 4” long by 20” wide at one end), weighting approximately 80 pounds.

The Lucky Peak Sailboat was also built with enough flotation to keep it from completely submerging when it is filled with water and passengers are clinging to it.
